An Overview of Programs

The SPFSA offers three distinct soccer programs for children of all ages in the Scotch Plains Fanwood area that are varying degrees of recreational, developmental and competitive. Complete information is available on the individual homepage links for each program.

HOUSE PROGRAM: An introductory program for children in pre-kindergarten through fourth grades that is both recreational and developmental. Eight intramural games per season are played on Saturday mornings on fields located throughout the two towns. All teams with the exception of the pre-kindergarten teams practice one time per week and are handled by parent coaches. Group training is part of the Saturday game program for the youngest ages. Separate group training is available for 2nd through 4th grades Saturday afternoons. Please note, pre-kindergarten players must be 4 years of age by 9/1/08 to play in the fall season and by 4/1/09 to play in the spring season. The House Program also includes a winter indoor option.

INTER-COUNTY PROGRAM: A continuation of the recreational program that is more competitive in nature for children in fifth grade and up, defined by divisions comprised of ages U-12, U-14 and U-17.  Eight league games per season are played on Saturday and Sunday afternoons throughout Union County concluding with playoffs.  All teams practice one time per week and are coached by parent volunteers. Group training is typically available one afternoon per week in addition to the regular team practices.

TRAVEL PROGRAM: A highly competitive developmental program based on tryout selection for children in second grade and up, defined as U-8 through U-17. Ten league games are typically played on Sunday afternoons throughout the state and are supplemented with 2-3 tournament weekends. All teams practice two times per week and are trained by hired professionals. A winter and summer training curriculum supplements the in-season work and includes fitness/speed/agility sessions.

All others that follow are charged at one-half the appropriate fee.

Online Registration Periods Twice Yearly
Penalties Incurred for Late Registration

The SPFSA conducts two registration periods for its two seasons. Fall registration is typically open from May 15th through June 30th. Late registration is then reopened from July 15th - 31st and includes a $20 late fee. Spring registration is typically open from October 15th through November 30th. Late registration is then reopened from January 15th - 30th and includes a $20 late fee.

Notice of registration periods is announced on this website’s homepage, emailed directly to all current SPFSA members several times, forwarded to all coaches, published in local newspapers and posted on the two local cable TV access bulletin boards.

Cut-off dates are crucial in allowing the volunteers of the SPFSA to properly roster teams, enlist coaches, contract trainers, compile game schedules, order uniforms, secure field permits, set practice schedules and the like. The SPFSA relies on parents taking the responsibility to register their children in a timely manner.
